Archive Storage, live file storage and document management - The right technology to minimise error

Business Records Management has invested heavily in a field of information technology that keeps many of the UK's manufacturers and retailers at their most efficient. BRM's task is to identify a file or document and draw it from the archive store for delivery to the desk of the user in the shortest possible time. When the user has finished with the file, BRM must collect it a return it to the store and hold it until it is required again. The file may be a series of boxes or a single folder or even a DAT tape. Not only does the technology have to identify the location of the file, it must be able to show a history or audit trail; a cost centre for the department within the customer; the destroy date and some secondary intuitive data to identify the contents. This is achieved with a complex SQL database, infra-red bar coding and wireless communications backed by a multi-platform server bank with dual 'lifeboats'.
